Boundary Bay - White Rock
Scenic Drive
2004-June-13
This time we had a very special visit from the North, Nadina and her son were
visiting Vancouver and they wanted to stay close to the ocean. We visited
Boundary Bay Regional Park. This park is a very important bird area.
This place is a rest stop for thousands of birds using the Pacific Flyway
migration route.

You can walk miles inside the ocean but be warned, check the tide table
before you go.
Nadina is from the real north, where people can withstand low temperatures
without problems.

For people from lower latitudes these low temperatures (-30 to -40C) usually
are "life-threatening". In winter, if you are not properly
protected frostbite could occur in less than 10 minutes.

I'll work for food, please
Well, the day was windy and cloudy. We couldn't stay very long on the
beach so we took a quick drive to the border. Behind the girls is Uncle
Sam's land. This place is known as Point Roberts, a town in Whatcom
Country, WA. It is unique in that it is a US town on a peninsula that is
not connected to the US mainland, but rather to British Columbia, Canada.

Through Point Roberts only borders Canada by land, it is part of the US
because it is South of the 49th parallel, the official latitude defining the
Canada-US border from British Columbia (excluding Vancouver Island) to Lake of
the Woods in Manitoba, Ontario, and Minnesota.

From there we drove to White Rock. Here, you can visit the colorful
sidewalk cafes, restaurants, and retail stores on the ground level.

This place has a moderate climate, and average of 23ºC in summer and 6ºC in
winter.

You can walk on the sandy beach and the very warm waters of Semiahmoo Bay.

The shallow waters of the Semiahmoo Bay make the beach the warmest ocean
beach in mainland British Columbia. If you go the pier, you can catch live
crab.

The name of "White Rock" came from a large white rock placed on the
beach. Nadina, we hope that you and your son had a good time, we really
enjoyed your company. Thank you for visit us and we hope to see you very
soon.

Round trip: 121.6 km (76 miles)
